Pilot beta now open · iPad

Know exactly when to start down. No signal needed.

Built for general aviation pilots. VNAV works out where to start your descent and the fpm you need, live from your iPad's own GPS. No Wi-Fi, no cell data, no in-flight connection of any kind.

Distributed through Apple TestFlight. Built-in GPS requires a cellular iPad.

Example: 9,000 ft down to 3,000 ft at the approach fix, 3° path, 120 kt ground speed. Not to scale. In the app, numbers update from live GPS as you fly.

Built for panels without VNAV

VNAV is mainly for airplanes that don't already have vertical navigation built into the panel: steam gauges, older GPS navigators and other setups where working out the top of descent is still done in your head.

If your airplane already has VNAV in the panel, such as a G1000-equipped aircraft, you most likely don't need this app. Your avionics already do the job, and they should stay your primary source.

Built for the way descents really get flown

Enter your fix and altitude, pick how you want to descend, and VNAV does the rest.

Fully offline

Runs on the iPad's own GPS. No internet at any point while flying. Data is loaded beforehand.

Two ways to plan

Set the angle and get the fpm, or set the fpm you want and see how far out to begin.

Live distance to the fix

Distances come from your GPS position, or type a distance when you only have a number from ATC or your GPS.

Several restrictions in order

Chain altitude crossings along your route, such as an IAF then the final approach fix, and see each leg's start point and rate.

Top of descent alert

A chime and banner before you reach TOD, so you are not watching the numbers.

ForeFlight import

Bring in a route from Garmin FPL, GPX or KML, and fix names resolve to positions offline.

Offline FAA fix data

Built from the FAA's 28-day data for the US. The app shows the cycle and warns you when it expires.

Saved routes

Keep your regular routes and restrictions ready to load before each flight.

STEP 1

Load your route

Import from ForeFlight or add fixes and altitudes by hand.

STEP 2

Choose angle or fpm

Pick the descent you fly. Set ground speed or let GPS supply it.

STEP 3

Fly it

Watch distance to TOD count down and get the alert.

More than a TOD calculator

VNAV also knows your airplane, follows you down the path and tells you how the descent went. All of this is in the app today.

In the app

Saved aircraft

One profile per airplane with its speeds, limits and descent habits. Pick it once and the plan fills itself in.

In the app

POH descent profiles

Segments, IAS and Mach schedules, wind and POH tables turned into a top of descent you can trust. You enter the numbers.

In the app

Recorder and live path

Record each descent and see how far above or below the planned path you are while you fly it.

In the app

Debrief and score

Replay a descent against the plan and get a score out of 100 with plain-language coaching notes.

More features are coming soon, shaped by feedback from the pilot beta. Join the beta and tell us what you want next.

Join the pilot beta

We are testing VNAV with a small group of general aviation pilots before wider release. Tell us how your descents really go.

  • Invites go out through Apple TestFlight, so use the email tied to your Apple Account.
  • You'll need an iPad. A cellular model has built-in GPS; Wi-Fi models need an external GPS receiver.
  • Your details are used only to send your invite and talk about the beta. See the privacy policy.

Planning aid only. VNAV is not certified and is not a navigation or flight-control device. GPS altitude is not pressure altitude. Navigation data covers the US and must be kept current. Wind and temperature are entered by you, not measured, and descent profiles use the numbers you enter from your POH. Cross-check all results against your avionics, charts and approved procedures.
